When you have a collection of old hard drives lying around, what are you meant to do with them? Destroy them? I've already done that before. Remove the magnets? I already have a collection of hard drive magnets too.
If you’ve got something flat and round, like a clockface, and you really like tech - what better to do than try to make something useful out of it.
I found some pre-made ones ready to order on Etsy, but they were about $100 each, and I figured it would be a fun little project to make one myself.
It took me a while to find some clock mechanisms with long spindles for a good price, but when I found some and they arrived I got to work tearing down the drive.
Once I removed the platters and the case, I was able to remove the motor. I took a metal punch to the motor bearings to be able to create a hole in the middle for the mechanism, trimmed down the hands and then started to clean and assemble everything.
After getting everything reassembled, I think it turned out pretty good, I still need to make a stand for it - but that should be pretty easy.
